Measurements of Renal Perfusion and Oxygenation in Swine: Preliminary Results

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Recent studies have demonstrated a link between the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents and the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) [1]. Given growing concerns of developing NSF, it has become important to investigate non-contrast methods of evaluating renal function. We have developed an MRI perfusion technique employing arterial spin labeling (ASL) [2] that allows for the measurement of cortical blood flow in the kidneys without the use of contrast. The goal of this study was to correlate ASL perfusion measures of cortical blood flow with blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) MRI measures of oxygen bioavailability and vital signs during pharmacologic and physiologic alterations in renal blood flow.

MR measures of renal perfusion, oxygen bioavailability and total renal blood flow in a porcine model: noninvasive regional assessment of renal function.
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be a useful adjunct to current methods of evaluating renal function. MRI is a noninvasive imaging modality that has the ability to evaluate the kidneys regionally, which is lacking in current clinical methods. Other investigators have evaluated renal function with MRI-based measurements, such as with techniques to measure cortical and medullary pe...
متن کاملMagnetic Resonance Imaging–Derived Renal Oxygenation and Perfusion During Continuous, Steady‐State Angiotensin‐II Infusion in Healthy Humans
BACKGROUND The role of kidney hypoxia is considered pivotal in the progression of chronic kidney disease. A widely used method to assess kidney oxygenation is blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD)-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), but its interpretation remains problematic. The BOLD-MRI signal is the result of kidney oxygen consumption (a proxy of glomerular filtration) and supply (ie, glomerular...
متن کاملEffect of Hyperoxia and Hypercapnia on Tissue Oxygen and Perfusion Response in the Normal Liver and Kidney
OBJECTIVE Inhalation of air with altered levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide to manipulate tissue oxygenation and perfusion has both therapeutic and diagnostic value. These physiological responses can be measured non-invasively with magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation times. However, interpreting MR measurements is not straight-forward in extra-cranial organs where gas challenge studies have onl...
متن کاملThe effects of Mas receptor antagonist (A779) and renal perfusion pressure on serum nitrite concentration in male and female rats when angiotensin II receptors 1 & 2 were blocked
Introduction: Renin angiotensin system has an important role in blood pressure and renal functions. Active angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 converts angiotensin I into angiotensin-(1-7) which is a vasodilator hormone and interacts with nitric oxide changes as well as other angiotensin II receptors. In this study we evaluated the role of Mas receptor antagonist (A779) and renal perfusion press...
متن کاملThe effect of AT2 and Mas receptors antagonists on renal hemodynamic and excretory disorders induced by ischemia/reperfusion in male and female rats
Introduction: Renal ischemia-reperfusion (RIR) may disturb renin-angiotensin system components. In this study, the effects of Mas receptor (A779) and AT2 receptor (PD123319) antagonists were examined in RIR rats. Methods: Total 60 male and female Wistar rats were assigned into 10 groups (n=6 in each group), including sham-operated group, RIR groups treated with the vehicle, A779, PD123319, ...
